"Sklau7"
My grandfather ran the longest trap line in British Columbia. In his day, pelts turned
into money. So in his language, Shuswap, the words for beaver and money are one and the
same, "Sklau7."
Northern beaver pelts used to fetch a handsome price in London. The British turned
those beavers into fancy hats for gentlemen. Not much for the beaver in that.
Seems that some folks got rich off the beavers back. Some stayed poor. And on the
brink of extinction, the beaver was honored as Canadas national symbol.
