In the Beginning
The Creator made Raven and Coyote tricksters from coast and
plateau, respectively for his amusement and our vexation. No one knows for sure
what he fashioned them from, but judging by this carving, he might have used a traditional
Salish spindle whorl and spun them from mountain goats wool. No doubt Raven and
Coyote were up to their usual business before too long discouraging darkness,
absconding with the moon, even stealing thunder. Sometimes these two did something useful.
Well, maybe that was by accident. Here they are bringing light to the world -- a pretty
good trick.
